Membership and sponsorship schemes
Many voluntary organisations operate membership schemes. These often offer something to you in return – access to historic buildings, nature reserves, galleries, or magazines and the chance to attend events.
Others are based on shared beliefs or lifestyle choices. Most memberships also have a fundraising element to them – a proportion of your regular fee is a donation, but this is not always the case, especially if you are paying a concessionary or reduced membership rate. If you are in any doubt you should contact the organisation to find out.

More and more organisations now offer the opportunity for supporters to sponsor a beneficiary or a project. These schemes bring you closer to the work you are supporting so you can get a real picture of what sort of difference your money is making.
Check carefully to make sure you understand the terms of any sponsorship before you sign up, to avoid subsequent confusion or disappointment.
Schemes that seem identical on the surface can be very different in detail – they are all valuable as far as the charity is concerned but may offer different experiences to you as a donor and you need to know what to expect.
